ERNEST L. SMITH is a strong advocate for the health, safety, and rights of the people. He was raised in East Cleveland and attended East Cleveland City Schools including Mayfair Elementary, Kirk Middle Schools (now Heritage Middle School), and Shaw High School. After a few odd jobs, Ernest L. Smith was very passionate about working closely with the youth. He saw a great need for mentorship and community involvement. He worked at Chambers Elementary where he was inspired to mentor youth and develop young people. After 12 years of service in the East Cleveland Public Schools, he never gave up his passion for educating the youth. He started sharing his knowledge of Black History at a local charter school and this became a torch for furthering his mission to advocate for human rights and teaching the youth of today self-awareness, community appreciation, and respect for our elders. Councilman Smith is very active in the community of East Cleveland not only working with our youth but listening and being hands-on with our senior citizens. He developed and implemented several community programs and initiatives such as community clean-up projects, free clothing and shoes, food for the needy, and stop the violence projects. Ernest Smith also has implemented the Cardinal Watch Program which ensures the safety of youth from school to home. In addition, the Cardinal Clean-Up Program promoting beautification of our city among other initiatives.
Councilman Smith’s current initiative for Ward 3 is to revitalize block clubs in the community and ensuring neighborly involvement in furthering community outreach projects that will benefit the people of East Cleveland.
